Gulangyu, a Historic International Settlement
Gulangyu Island

A unique architectural synthesis of 19th and 20th-century Western and Chinese styles found nowhere else.
Shuzhuang Garden: A stunning seaside garden that incorporates the "borrowed scenery" technique from the ocean.
Piano Museum: Home to an extensive collection of rare pianos, reflecting the island’s high concentration of musicians.
Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan): The highest point on the island, offering a panoramic view of the red-roofed villas and the Xiamen skyline.
No-Car Policy: The island is pedestrian-only, preserving its tranquil, historic atmosphere.
Located on the estuary of the Chiu-lung River facing Xiamen, Gulangyu is a tiny island that became an international settlement in 1903. It is a exceptional example of cultural fusion, where traditional Chinese architecture, local South Fujian features, and Western Neoclassical and Romantic styles merged to create the unique "Amoy Deco" style. The island is also famous for its musical heritage, known as the "Island of Pianos."
