The Temple of Heaven

Temple of Heaven: an Imperial Sacrificial Altar in Beijing

1. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests: An iconic triple-gabled circular building built without nails;
2. The Imperial Vault of Heaven: Home to the famous Echo Wall;
3. The Circular Mound Altar: An open-air three-tiered white marble altar;
4. Danbi Bridge: The sacred raised walkway connecting the main structures.

The Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design which simply and graphically illustrates a cosmogony of great importance for the evolution of one of the world’s great civilizations. It was where Ming and Qing emperors performed annual rites of sacrifice to heaven for good harvests.
